SJC Decides Major Alimony Case

This week the Supreme Judicial Court made an important decision interpreting the Alimony Reform Act of 2011. In Young v. Young the Court ruled that a Probate and Family Court judge’s decision to order a man to pay his ex-wife 33% of his annual income was excessive. The SJC ruled the alimony award should allow the wife to maintain the lifestyle she had at the time of the divorce but not give her the benefit of future increases in the husband’s earnings.
